“He came back to see me, which was great for me, because I was really enjoying his company. We did end up sleeping together after his fourth visit. A few months later, I found out I was pregnant with Kyle. Peter was very excited to have a child. He wanted me to quit my job and move me to Dallas so we could be close together. At first, I was hesitant to do it, but I later realized that I wanted to be with him, not only because he was the father of my child, but also because I loved him.

“Once I was about to make the changes, I received a phone call from someone saying that she was Peter’s wife and that she knew I was sleeping with him. She said if I didn’t end the affair, she would kill me. I couldn’t believe that had happened to me. The fact that I was sleeping with a married man. That was something I said I would never do because that's what my mom done and it made me think differently of her. Now, I was just like her, which was tearing me up inside.

“After thinking about it and praying, I decided to leave your father alone. I didn’t want to upset your mother any more than I did, so I made up my mind to raise Kyle on my own. Of course Peter wouldn’t stand for it. He wanted to be a part of Kyle’s life, whether Sophia liked it or not, so he did what he could to be in both of our lives.”

“Wait, what?! You told me that Peter didn’t want anything to do with me.”

Ms. Baxter looked at Kyle and sighed. “I said that because of the situation. Your father wanted to be a part of your life. Those times he came by, I had no control over. He never informed me he was coming over; he just showed up. He figured if he did that I wouldn’t say anything.”

“You kept him away from me.”

“I did it to protect you, Kyle!”

“Why would you say that?” I asked.

“Because your mom is crazy! She did not want another woman to have your father’s child, especially when she couldn’t.”

  “What?”

Ms. Baxter sighed. “At that point, your father had no choice but to tell me the truth. He mentioned that he was married, but it was on the rocks. The two were having so many problems, from him going on various trips to them not being able to conceive, the marriage was just in shambles. When he met me, he felt he could breathe again and be happy. To be honest, he just wasn’t in love with her anymore.”

I leaned back on the couch and ran a hand through my hair. I don’t know if I want to hear anymore.

“No matter how much I had tried to push your father away, he wouldn’t listen. He tried to come back, even if your mother knew about it, because he didn’t care.”

“So why did he disappear then?” Kyle asked.

“Because he found out that Sophia was pregnant with you, Morgan. I told him to go back to her and to leave us alone.”

“Wow, this is unbelievable. Why would you do that?! I missed out on having a life with my father, especially since he was sick!” Kyle yelled.

“You don’t understand, Kyle. I did it for a reason. Sophia was not only threatening me, but she was threatening you as well. I didn’t know what that woman was capable of, so that’s why I cut all ties with your father.”

I glanced from Ms. Baxter to Kyle in shock. This was another side of my mom that I didn’t know about. Threats about killing someone! This was crazy!

Hayley held me while I took a deep breath. I think she didn’t believe what was happening either.

“Don’t you find it a coincidence that a year after your father came to see you that he died? Peter never mentioned that he had cancer nor that he was dying.”

“He could had been keeping it a secret.” I said softly.

“Or it could had been a cover up for something else. Your father did have a hefty insurance policy. He had trusts all over in different bank accounts. At one point, he told me that he was going to divorce Sophia and marry me; not only because he loved me, but also because he didn’t want Sophia to have anything. If she knew what he was up to, she could had killed him to keep the insurance money.”

“I can’t listen to this anymore.” I said.

I got up and looked at Ms. Baxter. “Thank you for telling me the story about you and my father, but it’s hard to imagine that my mom would do any of what you just said.”

“I know it’s hard to hear, but I’m telling you the truth. Morgan, she’s not who you think she is. Although I’m not condoning to what your father has done, he only did it because of the reasons I gave you.”

“I need to know one thing.”

Ms. Baxter looked into my eyes while I took another deep breath. I had to take some time before I asked this question.

“Was the problems they were having was due to her having an affair first?”

“Do you really want to know, Morgan?”

“You told me everything else, so this shouldn’t be any different.”

Ms. Baxter gave me a sincere look before she spoke. “Yes, Morgan. She was having an affair with Craig McFarlane.”

I was starting to tense up from what I just heard. Since the six months I have been in hiding, I have become calmer; but now since I heard this, I felt that anger was coming back to me in full force.

Hayley took one look at me and knew this conversation was over.

“I think we should go. It was really nice to meet you, Ms. Baxter. I really hope we haven’t taken much of your time.” She said while getting up.

“No, not at all. Although it was unexpected, I’m glad Kyle brought you here, Morgan. You needed to know the truth about what happened. You needed to know the real woman that your mom has tried desperately to cover up.”

I stared at Kyle, who also had a shocked look. I was trying to get information, but it fucking backfired on me. Now, I wished I didn’t know anything that I just heard.

  Hayley

I looked at Morgan as he stared out of the window. We were heading back to my parent's house still reeling from what we just heard. Kyle decided to stay with his mom for awhile, but I mentioned I would come back to get him before we headed back to Thompson.

“I know this is probably a dumb question, but are you okay?”

Morgan quickly looked at me before staring back out the window. “I’m cool.”

“I know that was hard to hear.”

  “Yeah, it was.”

“So, your suspicions about your mom and Craig were true.”

“I wish it wasn’t. How could she? I thought she was so in love with my dad, but it was all a fucking lie. What if I’m Craig’s son? He made that stupid remark that night about my dad not actually being my dad. I could be a crazy ass McFarlane and don’t even know it. It could explain a lot to why I’m the person that I am.”

“Stop it! You’re not a McFarlane. You’re nothing like them.”

“I killed a man! I said I would keep killing people if they stood in my way. That’s something they would say to protect themselves.”

“You said that because of what you’ve been going through. Baby, don’t ever compare yourself to them.”

He continued to look ahead while I turned the corner to my neighborhood.

“Besides, Kyle’s mom said you looked exactly like your father, so there’s no reason to think otherwise.”

“That could be a lie, just like everything else that has been happening.”

I sighed as I pulled up to the driveway. Maybe Lamar could talk some sense into him. On the other hand, if I was in this situation, I’m sure I would be reacting the same way.

“Hey. How did it go?” Lamar asked. Him and Tamara were already outside. I guess they were eager to know what happened.

“We learned a lot about Morgan’s dad and mom.” I said as I closed the car door.

  “Yeah, too much.” Morgan said.

“What does that mean? What the hell happened?” Lamar asked.

“There’s a lot we all didn’t know about Morgan’s mom, especially with her having an affair with Craig while she was still married.”

“What? So that means…” Tamara said.

  I nodded. Morgan
s dad knew about Craig.

“Wow. Now I see why Morgan’s not talking.” Lamar added.

I went over to Morgan and gave him a hug. “Maybe you should stay here tonight. My parents won’t mind.”

“They probably will since you two are together.” Lamar mentioned.

“It’s okay; I’ll just get a room. I really don’t want to be around anyone anyway.”

  “Not even me?”

  “Sorry, Hales…”

“Remember what we talked about at the cabin. We’re not going to hide from each other anymore. Your problems are mine, so wherever you’re going, I’m coming with you.”

He nodded as I looked at Lamar. “Please call me if anything comes up with Mom.”

“Sure. Just look after him, okay.”

  “Of course.”

As Lamar and Tamara went back inside, I went to the car and opened the driver’s door.

“Let’s go so we can be alone.”

Morgan nodded and I started the car. I knew I needed to do what I could to help him. He needed all of the support he could receive right now.

After going to the nearest hotel and checking in, the two of us were laying in bed staring at the ceiling. We haven’t say anything from the time we left my house to when we arrived, so I knew Morgan just wanted some time to process everything.

“After everything my mom and I went through she had never once mentioned that she was seeing Craig. Why would she do that to my dad?”

I looked at Morgan and saw the sad look he had. It was tearing me apart that he was going through this. This made me want to go over to his house and give his mom a piece of my mind, but I knew that wouldn’t solve anything.

“Sometimes, we can’t always figure out things when they happen. It just does.”

Morgan shook his head and faced me. He pulled me closer to him and smiled.

  “Thank you.”

  “For what?”

“For being here, even when I tried to push you away. I’m really sorry for everything and I promise you that I’ll make it up to you.”

“There’s nothing you have to make up. I understand that you’re going through a lot right now, so I just want to support you, that’s all.”

“That’s one of the reasons why I love you.”

I smiled as I leaned closer to him. “Whatever happens with your mom, just know that I’ll be there for you, okay.”

“I know. And I will be talking to Kimbella soon about what happened today. I want you to be there with me.”

I nodded and put my head on his chest. He sighed as he ran his hand through my hair. My heart went out to him because I knew this was just the beginning for him and the secrets he was learning about his family.

We continued to lay in bed for a good part of the day when I started to get hungry. I ordered room service when I noticed Morgan was waking up from his nap. He smiled as he saw me in my black bra and boy shorts.

“Hmm, that’s definitely a sight I would love to wake up to every day. Besides you being naked, of course.”

“Of course.” I said as I leaned over and kissed him. “Feeling any better?”

“I wish I was, but no.”

“It’ll take time to process everything.”

“Do you think my mom was lying about Kyle’s mom and her being with Travis?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. Lately, everyone has been keeping secrets which in the end will surely come to light.”

  “You’re right.”

“Which is why I need to tell you something too.”

Morgan looked at me while I put my hand in his. “Before I was shot, I thought I was pregnant.”

He gave me a surprised look while I held his hand tighter.

“Was that why you didn’t want me to come back with you to the guest house?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I was going to buy a pregnancy test, which I did. I was going to see if I was when everything went down.”

  “You weren’t, were you?”

I shook my head. “No. Dr. Harrison confirmed it. I was never pregnant.”

“I can’t say that I’m not relieved. Even now is not a good time to be.”

“We have been going without protection, Morgan, so it can happen.”

  “You’re not on the pill?”

“No; I should had been, but never was. I’m definitely not now since I haven’t had a reason to be since I wasn’t doing anything.”

Morgan took a deep breath. “Honestly, baby, I don’t know if I want to be a father. You see how screwed up my life is.”

“Your life is, but that’s not you. That’s just your family putting you through a lot. I think you would make a great father, so don’t doubt yourself.”

  “You really think so?”

“I know so. Anyway, I don’t know why we’re still talking about this. I wasn’t pregnant, so we should drop it.”

  “Do you want to be?”

I looked at Morgan and smiled. “I would love to be one day, but I agree with you, right now is not the best time.”

“In that case, we probably need to get some condoms.” He said as he got up.

I unhooked my bra and threw it to the floor. My legs were spread as I took off my shorts and threw them at him.

“Do you really want to right now?”

He looked at my body and shook his head. “Shit, you’re making it hard right now.”

I motioned for him to come over, which he gladly did. I knew I shouldn’t be doing this, but at this point, if something did happen, we would get through it, just like we have with everything else.

  Kyle

It has been a month since our visit to Houston and I’m still in shock over what happened. The fact that my mom didn’t even mention anything to me about my dad and then Morgan’s mom behavior still bothered me. From what I saw at Hayley’s house, she still held a grudge toward my mom, so if she knew she was close by, she could try to harm her, which didn’t sit right with me.

I talked to my aunt to keep a very close eye on her just in case that does occur. Although it was a long shot, I wasn’t taking any chances. If I have to, I would move to Houston so I could be close by and drive to Thompson on the weekends for the club. I might not have to but it was a possibility.

While my mind was going through so much, I did have a bright spot, and that was Demetria. From the short time we had spent together, she had really grew on me. She’s different from the other girls I have been with, and the sex is incredible, so I don’t have any complaints. I do want to see where things are going between us, though. I’m not sure if she’s ready, but I think I am. I think I’m at the stage of my life that I want to be committed to someone. I just hope Demetria is the right one for me.

But in order for me to get to that point, I probably need to talk to her about everything that has been happening. I haven’t told her since I figured we just met, but I think now I should.

I stared at her as she was asleep beside me. I gently touched her shoulder when her eyelids fluttered. She peeked through her lashes and slowly smiled.

“Hey. How long was I asleep?”

“For awhile, but I figured you needed your rest.”

  “That I did. Thanks.”

She leaned in closer to me and I put my arm around her.

“So what are your plans for today?” she asked.

“Just going to the club, that’s all.”

“Do you mind if I tag along? I don’t have any classes today, so I figured I could do something.”

“Sure, no problem. I would like the company.”

She blushed while I caressed her arm.

“Where do you see us going? Do you want us to be in a relationship?”

Demetria looked surprised at my statement. “I thought we were.”

“I figured we only known each other for a month, so I didn’t think we got to that yet.”

She sat up and gave me a sincere look. “Kyle, I really like you. You
re different from the other guys I have talked to, but I don’t think we should get into something so quickly.”

“We’ve known each other for a month now. I think we can continue to learn more about each other as time goes.”

  “You do have a point.”

“I really do like you, Demetria, so I want to see where this goes between us.”

She gave a hesitant look before speaking. “If we do try to take this further, we need to be honest with each other. I don’t expect for you to be an open book, but at least talk to me when something is bothering you. You still haven’t talked about what happened when you went to Houston. If you did, I would be able to help you through it.”

I sighed. I knew I needed to, that way I could have a clear conscience.

“A lot has happened during that visit. A lot was revealed that even I didn’t know about.”

As I told Demetria everything, her expression went from sympathy to shocked from everything that I said. Once I was done, she was speechless.

“I know that was a lot.”

“It definitely was, but I’m glad you trust me enough to tell me.”

I nodded as she smiled. I did feel a lot better since I got everything off of my chest. I just hope it doesn’t come back to haunt me later.

  Demetria

After Kyle told me everything that happened between him, Morgan, and Hayley, I knew I needed a damn drink. Their lives have turned upside down because of the McFarlanes. I don’t know how my dad got mixed up in their mess, but knowing him, he probably was involved

because of money. Whether it was to hurt or kill someone, my dad didn’t turn down a job,

especially if the money was right. That’s how his ass got killed in the first place.

I pretended to be asleep so I could stay a little longer in Kyle’s place. I knew he would let me sleep since he didn’t want to wake me. This would give me the perfect opportunity to snoop around and to find something to take back to Shantel.

Once he was gone, I slowly sat up and sighed. Honestly, I really didn’t want to continue with this plan. I really do like Kyle and I wanted to see where things went between us. From the short time I’ve known him, he has treated me with kindness and respect, which was something I haven’t experienced in a long time. If I wasn’t in this fucked-up situation, I could really see myself falling for him.
