  Love.

A lot of people take that word for granted. Some do it because they’re scared to be loved by someone, or feel that they shouldn’t be. I have felt that way before, all because of the things I have done. I never thought I was worthy of it.

  Until I met Hayley.

Hayley is and always has been the love of my life. When I first laid eyes on her, I knew she would be the one for me, but I let my personal views on love and life get in the way of happiness. When she made me realize how precious life can be, I let all of my past feelings go and just lived. That’s something I haven’t done in a long time. Since I have been with Hayley, I never looked back. Even with all of the bullshit that has happened with us, our love became stronger, which I’m happy for every single day.

Since Hales and I got married, we have been living a pretty normal life. We have a two- year-old son, Morgan Jr., who we call MJ. That boy is certainly a handful but I enjoy being a father to him. It’s definitely the highlight of my day. Not only are we parents, but Hales is working as a private event consultant with a high-profiled agency, while I took an extremely different career path. I decided to become a cop.

  Yep, a cop.

After the incidents concerning my family, I wanted to give back to society in some sort so I decided to go to the academy. Throughout the training, I kept wondering if I was doing the right thing, but when I looked at what I have been through and the future that I will have with my family, I knew I was making the right decision. Two years later and I was promoted to being a detective. With my new title, I knew one thing I wasn’t going to do and that was abuse my badge like my so called father did. To be honest, I think that was another reason why I went into law enforcement.

Sometimes, I have to laugh at the life that I’m living right now. Me, Morgan Carter, the former womanizer, is talking about happiness and love and living a normal life. That’s something I’ve never experienced, but I’m glad that I’m able to now.

  “Morgan! Morgan?!”

I looked over to see Hayley staring at me. She is still as beautiful as when I first laid eyes on her all of those years ago. Her curly hair was now a honey brown color to match her honey skin tone. Her brown eyes looked into mine as she gave me a huge smile and leaned closer to me.

“Hey, baby. I didn’t hear you come in.”

“That was because you were asleep. Long day?”

I slowly sat up from the couch and looked around. I looked down at my clothes realizing that I was still wearing the suit that I’d gone to work in.

“You must really have had a long day if you’re still in your clothes.”

“I guess I laid down as soon as I walked in.” I slowly replied.

“Luckily MJ is staying with my parents tonight, or you probably would have forgotten to pick him up,” H
ales said. She paused before speaking again. “Or did you forget that he was spending the night there?”

I sat up on the couch and ran my hand through my hair. “I guess it’s this case I’m working on. Between meeting with the Sergeant and working these damn stakeouts, I guess I just lost track of everything.”

Hayley smiled and sat down beside me. She motioned for me to turn so that my back was facing her.

“I guess a massage is in order then.”

  “That would be nice.”

Once her hands were on my body, I immediately relaxed. Just having her near me was all I needed.

“I know you can’t talk about any of your cases, but…”

“You’re right… I can’t. As much as I want to I can’t jeopardize any type of information we have on certain suspects. Not just that but I don’t want to put you or MJ’s life in danger.”

“I understand, baby. I just wanted to understand how your days are with you working on the force. I still find it hard to believe that you’re on the force.”

I chuckled. “I think no one saw that coming.”

She turned me so I could face her again. She ran her fingers through my hair and smiled. “I know why you’re doing it, though. You needed to find a purpose for everything that has happened with your family.”

“Let’s hope I don’t have to deal with any of them again.”

“I hardly doubt it. With Travis, Will, Caroline, and Sophia still in prison and Rick dead, that will be highly unlikely that you’ll come across any of them again.”

I leaned my back on the couch and sighed. “I have thought about it, though. Whether anyone would try and come after us again.”

  “Morgan…”

“Hales, even though we have been living this perfect life, we still shouldn’t let our guards down. There could be other people out there who are working with Travis but just haven’t made their move yet.”

“Do you think you’re overreacting a bit? It’s been almost three years, baby. If anyone was going to do anything, they would have done so already.”

“Do you really think that? If anyone does make another move, cop or not, I will be ready.”

Hayley sighed. “Maybe I just got too comfortable with actually living a normal life compared to us always on the run looking over our shoulders.”

“I sort of forgot too, but just for a little while.”

Hayley leaned her head on my shoulder and I wrapped my arms around her. She gave a soft sigh.

“Should we be worried about this now, though? Your cousin is getting married next week, so whatever thoughts you’re having, you shouldn’t worry him about it.”

I caressed her shoulder, knowing she was right, but I can’t stop thinking about it, especially when I have information about Travis being released from prison. I didn’t know if I should tell Hales about it, especially since everything is going so good between us.

I’ll tell her when the time was right. Whenever that may be.

  Hayley

  Love.

Some people don’t get to experience it in their lifetime. Some are just scared to. I can say that I’m blessed to have experienced it with Morgan. I knew the moment I’d laid my brown eyes on him that he would be my soulmate. After everything we have been through, it just made my love for him even stronger.

Now that the two of us are living the family life, it feels good but a tiny part of me sort of misses the thrill-seeking couple that we used to be. Not the running after guns and getting shot part; just the spontaneous action we used to have when we first started dating.

Once Morgan and I ate dinner, I let him get some rest. I knew he was tired from work. He’s been at the station nonstop for the past two weeks on a case he couldn’t discuss. Majority of his cases he couldn’t talk about, but he’ll give hints to some of them and I’ll figure out what they are. This one, he has had a tight lip on, which I wasn’t mad about but it did make me feel some type of way. We tell each other everything, so this was sort of bittersweet that this part of our lives we couldn’t share.

Within minutes, Morgan was back asleep and with MJ with my parents, I decided to get some work done. I did have a project due soon, so this was a good time to get some of it done.

I glanced at my computer screen wondering where to begin when my phone rang. My future sister-in-law, Tamara, was calling. Although she doesn’t know it yet, I know my brother will propose to her soon.

  He better.

  “Hey Tam, what’s up?”

“Hey Hales, I was just calling.”

“Uh-no, what has my big-headed brother done now?”

Tamara laughed. “Lamar hasn’t done anything, Hales. He’s still the perfect gentleman.”

  “He better be.”

“I was seeing what you were up to. My mind is all over the place because of work and I just needed someone to talk to.”

“Say no more, Tam. Want to go to our usual spot?”

  “Yes! Thank you.”

“No prob. I’ll see you in a few.”

After we disconnected, I shut down my computer and walked into my bedroom. I heard Morgan softly snoring as I went up to him. I gave him a quick peck on the lips and he slowly opened his eyes.

“Hey, just letting you know, I’m going out with Tam for a bit.”

“I thought you had work to do?”

“It can wait. My mind wasn’t on it anyway.”

“Okay, don’t stay out too long. I’ll be wide awake when you return.”

  “Really?”

“Definitely. We should take advantage of the alone time we have now.”

I smiled as Morgan leaned over to kiss me.

“Maybe I should call Tam and cancel.”

“Go, baby. I’m not going anywhere.”

I kissed him again and went to put on my shoes. After all of these years, Morgan still looks good. His blue eyes were still clear and beautiful like a deep blue ocean. His blond hair was still short and cropped, but his athletic body has changed a bit. Since he joined the force, he has bulked up a bit. I didn’t think he could get any sexier, but he definitely has.

“You’re thinking about doing me this second, aren’t you?”

I laughed. “You still cocky as ever.”

  “You’re not denying it, though.”

I gave him a sexy smile. “I guess you’ll know soon enough, hubby.”

I leaned down and kissed him again before grabbing my wristlet and keys. Hopefully, my visit with Tamara doesn’t take too long because Morgan and I have some much-needed alone time to share.

  ***

Twenty minutes later and I was parking in front of Lighthouse. This place is Tamara and mine’s go-to spot when we needed to unwind from our busy schedules. With Tamara being a financial consultant, I know her job is very demanding, so maybe I’m doing her a favor by meeting with her.

I walked into the lounge and saw Tamara seated in a booth near the bar. I went over to her and gave her a hug.

“Hey, honey. You look good.” I said and sat down.

“I may not look it, but I’m stressed out. I never realized how demanding this new position is. I feel as if I’m working 24/7. I’m surprised Lamar hasn’t been complaining to you or Morgan about it.”

“Probably to Morgan but definitely not me. He knows I’ll just tell you if he was.”

“I guess I’m just wondering if he has. He’s been really jumpy lately about the company.”

I put down my menu and sighed. There have been some rumors going around that my dad wanted to retire and possibly give the company to Lamar. Since he has been working there after graduating grad school, he has contributed tremendously to the company’s turnaround. I’m proud of Lamar and what he has accomplished so far in his career.

I know it’ll probably piss some people off if my dad appointed him as the new owner, but at least the company will still be with the family.

“He’s just under a lot of pressure right now. He’ll go back to his usual uptight se
lf once my dad gives him the keys to the company.”

Tamara shook her head. “You’re a mess.”

“You know he will be. When has Lamar ever loosened up?”

Tamara stared at me and nodded. “Exactly.”

“Honestly, I think him taking over the company might add more issues for him. That’s why I’m not going to tell him about my side business.”

I raised my brow and Tamara smiled. “I never told anyone but I make jewelry. It’s sort of a therapeutic thing for me, especially now.”

“How long have you been a designer?”

“Since I was a senior in high school. I couldn’t find what I wanted to pair with my homecoming dress, so I had a great idea to make my own necklace and earring set. I received a lot of compliments for it.”

“Wow. Why you never told me that you made jewelry? You know I love jewelry.”

Tamara shrugged. “I just wanted something to keep to myself.”

  “But we’re family, Tam.”

She looked at me and gave an assuring smile. “I know Hales, but I sort of poured my heart out to one person about my dreams and they screwed me over.”

“That doesn’t mean everyone will especially Lamar or me.”

“I know. But some things I just rather leave personal.”

I stared at her, wondering if there was anything else she was hiding. I really hoped not, for Lamar’s sake.

“Anyway, enough about me, how are things going with you? I know Morgan’s been busy with work lately.”

  “Yeah, he has been.”

“I still can’t believe Morgan is working on the other side of the law.”

I smiled. “He has done a complete 180, but he’s still the same man that I fell in love with.”

“Does he talk about any cases with you?”

I sighed. “Not really, which I don’t have a problem with. But lately, I noticed a change in him; he seems on edge with things. At first, I thought it was because he’s been spending a lot of time at the station; but now, I’m not too sure.”
