“No, I’m not. Morgan needs me right now. I just don’t want a witness to come forward. Paula was the only one who knew and well, you know what happened to her.”
“Which I find pretty sad. From what you told me, she had her issues, but she didn’t deserve to die like that.”
“Well, Will was a little mental.”
“I think Will just wanted to be loved by his family, so he did whatever he could to feel accepted.”
I nodded and sighed. “At least keep a lawyer on standby.”
“Your dad is still looking.”
I put my head on my mom’s shoulder and she touched my hair.
“No matter what’s going on in your life, just know I love you, okay.”
“I know, Mom. I love you too.”
Morgan
After sleeping for half of the afternoon, I woke up to find myself in bed. I knew Hayley was beside me when I went to sleep. I guess she left for a little bit. I slowly got up, wishing I hadn’t. I was feeling the effects of my drinking binge. That was one of the reason why I stopped drinking the heavy shit, but at the time, I needed something to calm my nerves.
I walked into the living room and saw Kyle, Lamar, and Demetria sitting on the couch.
“How in the hell you all get in here? Did Hales let you in?”
“That’s why we’re here. We needed to talk to you about her.” Lamar said.
“And we got in by the key under the mat, which honestly, you shouldn’t have kept there.” Kyle said and got up.
“No one is out here but me, so it doesn’t matter. So, what’s going on with Hayley?”
“She went to Houston to confront your mom and dragged Tamara with her.”
“What? Why in the hell would she do that?”
“Because that’s how Hayley is. We really need to figure out what to do about your mom before shit really start happening.” Kyle said.
“Especially since Hayley went over to her house and acted a damn fool.” Lamar added.
The door opened and Hayley and Tamara walked in. I folded my arms across my chest and gave a stern look.
“Hey, baby. I didn’t think you would be up.” Hayley said.
“I’m doing better compared to earlier. Where did you go?”
“I went to visit my mom and asked Tamara to come with me.”
“Did you go anywhere else?”
Hayley looked at Tamara who sighed.
“Sorry, I told Lamar.”
She rolled her eyes and sighed.
“Don’t be mad at her. I can’t believe you went over there. Now, she could be capable of doing far worse because of your mouth.”
“Are you serious? I went over there because of you and how you were hurting. I couldn’t stand to see you that way so I did what I had to do, just like you would had for me.”
“I appreciate that, but Hales, if she is deranged, she could had done something to you and to Tamara. Next time you do something like that, tell me first.”
“How could I when you were passed out drunk. I told you countless times that I can take care of myself, so you don’t have to worry about me.”
I shook my head and sighed. Damn, she can be stubborn.
“What's done is done, now; so we should focus on what our next move will be.” Hayley said. She looked over and saw Demetria sitting on the couch. I guess she didn’t even know she was there.
“Hey, Demetria. I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Well, I am Kyle’s girlfriend.” She smugly replied.
“I know, but this is a private matter that you don’t need to be a part of.”
“Hayley, stop.” Kyle said.
“Sorry to disappoint you, but I pretty much know what’s going on, so there’s no point in hiding it now.”
Hayley smirked as she walked over to me. “Do we really need her here?” She whispered.
“Honestly, no, but she’s Kyle’s girl, so we should let it be.”
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you if anything happens.”
She walked over to the couch and I followed her. I glanced over at Kyle and Demetria as she had her arm around him. He gently touched it and smiled. I didn’t want to knock my brother’s happiness, but I do agree with Hayley. She probably doesn’t need to be here, but it’s too late to do anything about it. Let’s just hope she can be trusted.
Kyle
I looked from Hayley to Morgan and sensed those two didn’t want Demetria here. They didn’t trust her, which was understandable after everything they had been through, but I trusted her, so that all that mattered.
Morgan and I had a rocky start to our relationship, but with Hayley being shot, it did help our relationship grow. Now, we’re actually acting like brothers. He even went out of his way to pay the money I needed to get Corey off of my back, so for that, I’ll always be grateful to him and would help him anyway I can.
When he asked to talk to my mom about her and our dad, I didn’t want to do it, but it actually helped him see what really happened during that time and that my mom was not the home wrecker that his mom claimed her to be. Instead, his mom was doing all of the dirt, which was starting to come to light now.
I have spoken to my mom after that day and she seemed to be doing a lot better. I guess that talk she had with Morgan did help some. Now that has cleared up, there was something that was bothering me with Demetria. There was something I saw a couple of days ago that I haven’t had a chance to discuss with her. Now that everyone was busy discussing a plan, I figured it was time to ask her. I motioned for her to go outside with me. Once I closed the door, she gave me a concerned look.
“Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, everything’s good. I was just thinking about something.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t really be here. It seems as if Hayley is upset that I am.”
“Don’t worry about Hales. She’ll be okay. Now, maybe you can help me with something.”
“What’s that?”
“I noticed in your car that you had some information about Morgan. Is there a reason for that?”
Demetria gave me a nervous expression as she pulled on her shirt sleeve. “I don’t know what you mean?”
“There was a piece of paper with his name as well as his therapist’s name. Why would you have that?”
She continued to stare at me, not knowing what to do. It seemed as if she was trying to figure out a lie to tell me. I gave her an impatient stare as she wrung her hands together.
“It was for a project in my class. His therapist was actually a guest speaker a couple of weeks ago.”
“That doesn’t explain why Morgan’s name was included. She wouldn’t had given out her patients’ name or information.”
“I really don’t think I need to discuss this with you.”
“I think you do if you want this relationship to continue. I already told you from the jump that I didn’t want any secrets hanging over us. If there’s something you have on my brother I need to know now.”
Demetria continued to stare at me when I shook my head.
“Maybe it was a mistake to bring you here. You should leave.”
“Kyle…”
“If you are plotting something against Morgan and Hayley, it won’t be while you’re with me. If you are, then I don’t need to be with you.”
“Kyle, there’s a reason why I had that information, but I can’t explain it to you now.”
“Do you really want me to tell everyone what’s going on?”
“No, please don’t. You don’t understand what I’m going through right now.”
“If you tell me then maybe I can help you.”
“It’s not that simple.”
“Well, I guess there’s nothing we need to discuss then. Just leave.”
“You brought me here.”
“I suggest you find a way back to the dorms then.” I said.
I went inside and closed the door. I knew I was harsh, but there’s something she’s hiding. That’s one t
hing I didn’t like and that was someone who kept secrets. If she didn’t want to tell me, then we shouldn’t be together.
Demetria
I watched as Kyle closed the door and sighed. I knew this would catch up with me eventually. I was dumb enough to leave the information Sophia gave me in the side door compartment and Kyle must have saw it. Now I’m screwed. He will tell everyone what he found and they would be coming after me. I don’t know which would be worse: Morgan and Hayley destroying me or Sophia coming after me. All three were ruthless as hell.
I pulled out my phone about ready to call Leslie when I received a text from Sophia. I shook my head as I read the text. I really didn’t want to be bothered with her right now, but I figured I needed to know what she wanted.
I glanced at the text and I started to panic. Why would she want me to do that? There was no way I was going to do it. I put my phone back in my purse and knocked on the door. I think now was the time to tell Kyle and everyone what my involvement in their situation. I might as well because if I wasn’t going through this plan, I was going to end up dead anyway.
The door opened and Kyle stared at me.
“I told you to leave.”
“Can I talk to you? In fact, I think everyone needs to hear this.” I said and walked in.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and gave me the death stare. I see Kyle didn’t waste any time telling everyone.
“What the hell are you doing here? See, I told you not to trust her, Kyle.” Hayley fumed.
“Please, if you all let me explain…”
“Explain what? You had information on me and Kimbella and you expect us to listen to you? For all we know, you’re the one who killed her.” Morgan said.
“No, I didn’t, I swear. Please, just let me explain what’s going on.”
Everyone looked at me as Kyle went to sit down on the couch. I took a deep breath and sighed.
“Before I took Principles of Management, I already knew who you were, Hayley; in fact, I knew who all of you were.”
Hayley gave me a heated look as if she was going to jump over the couch and beat me. She probably should for what I’ve been doing.
“And how did you know who we were, Demetria?” Kyle asked.
“Because of the person who hired me to find out information about everyone.”
“I knew it!” Hayley exclaimed as she went to the kitchen. I looked down at the hardwood floor, not sure if I should continue.
“Don’t be scared now; you might as well tell us everything.” Morgan said.
“I’ve been keeping tabs on everyone since the start of the semester. I had to get information to pass on to the person behind the plan.”
“Which was?” Morgan asked.
“I can’t say that. Just know that I didn’t want to do this. I didn’t want to be involved in this person’s scheme, but the person offered $20,000 and I needed it for my classes so that’s why I went along with it.”
“So you’re trying to get us killed because you needed money? Unbelievable.” Kyle said.
“Believe me, if I could get out of this, I would, but it’s impossible.”
“Do you know who killed Kimbella and why?” Morgan asked.
I sighed. I really didn’t want to go into details about this, but from the looks on everyone’s faces, I probably won’t be leaving out of this cabin alive, so I didn’t have a choice.
“Kimbella was killed because she was starting to learn a lot about your past, Morgan; that’s why the person behind this plan wanted me to keep tabs on you so you wouldn’t find out the truth about everything.”
“It’s my mother, isn’t it?”
“Please, Morgan, I said too much.”
“Just tell me if it’s my mom who put you up to this?”
Tears came from my eyes as I nodded.
“Damn it!” He exclaimed. He wildly ran his hand through his hair and sighed.
“She was the one who killed Kimbella too, didn’t she?”
“I can’t say, Morgan. Honestly, I don’t know who did.”
“How you not going to know?”
“Because no one told me. Your mom mentioned that she was dead but never said if she was the one who shot her.”
“This is some fucked up shit.” Lamar mumbled.
“Is my mom the only person in this mess?”
I shook my head. “Shantel’s involved as well.”
“Of course.” Tamara said.
“She’s the one I’d been giving information to before your mom took over. In fact, I haven’t seen Shantel in almost three weeks.”
“Let me get this straight. Why would my mom hand pick you to do this? There’s got to be a reason why.” Morgan said.
I took another deep breath. I was preparing myself for the backlash that was about to come.
“She chose me because I’m the daughter of the person you killed, Hayley.”
She tilted her head, wondering if she heard me right. “What?”
“I’m Wilson Brown’s daughter, or to you, the guy who was trying to kidnap Hayley. The
shooting was a set-up. I’m sure my dad was hired to kidnap you, but of course, the plan didn’t go as expected.”
“So are you going to turn me in?”
“No. I knew it was self-defense. My dad had done a lot of wrong doing in his life, so this wasn’t a shock to me. In fact, I haven’t spoken to him in a year, so it wouldn’t had matter if he died or not. Like I said, I only was doing all of this because I needed money for my classes.”
“This is unbelievable.” Hayley said as she sat down on the couch.
“Why are you telling us this? I’m sure my mom will try and kill you.” Morgan said.
“Because I couldn’t live with myself anymore. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone, but when things started to get out of hand, I figured I had to say something.”
“It’s something else, isn’t it?” Kyle asked.
I closed my eyes as the tears started to fall again.
“I just got a text from Sophia. There was something she wanted me to do to your mom, Kyle.”
“What the hell was that?!”
“She wanted me to kidnap her and punish her the way Craig was punished. She got so fed up with everything that has happened and she’s blaming your mom for it. She said if I didn’t do it, then she will. I’m really sorry, Kyle, but you probably need to go see her.”
“Shit!” he exclaimed as he got up from the couch. He grabbed his phone and went to the door.
I turned to watch the door closed, wondering if I should follow him. I really didn’t want to be alone with everyone else.
I turned around and nervously folded my hands.
“Is there anything else you need to tell us?” Morgan asked.
“I think it’s time for you talk to my friend, Morgan. She’ll tell you everything that you need to know about your mom and Craig.”
Morgan
After Demetria made that confession regarding her and my mom, I didn’t know if I wanted to trust her with this new information she just gave. I wanted to go with Kyle to check on his mom, but Demetria mentioned her friend could only meet with me tonight, so Hayley and I went with her to the campus coffeehouse to see her.
The three of us sat at a booth waiting for her friend when Hayley looked at Demetria.
Demetria looked up and nervously stared at her hands.
“You know, Kyle really cares about you. How could you do this to him?”
“I care about him too. Even though our relationship was short, he was the only guy that made me feel special. That was one of the reasons why I wanted out of this plan.”
“I still can’t believe my mom is behind all of this. What the hell is she trying to cover up?”
“I wish I knew, Morgan. Evidentially, you were getting closer to it.”
“Where is your friend? We’ve been here for 30 minutes.” I said impatiently.
As soon as I said that, Demetria looked at the door and nodded. I
looked ahead and saw a female walking over to us. She had black hair and green eyes. She looked familiar, which meant.
“Hell, no.” I said silently.
“Hi Demetria. And you must be Morgan and Hayley.” The girl said and gave a slight smile.
“And you must be a McFarlane.” I said with a smirk.
“I guess the resemblance gave it away. I’m Leslie, by the way.” The girl said as she sat down beside Demetria.
“So, you’re upset with us because your family are locked up? You’re trying to destroy us too?”
“No, Morgan, I’m not. In fact, that’s where they needed to be.”
I raised my eyebrow, wondering if she was being truthful. “Really?”
“Not all the McFarlanes are scheming to destroy you, Morgan. My dad was so hell bent on getting revenge that he ended up behind bars. As for Will, he only wanted to be accepted, so he went along with whatever scheme our dad thought of.”
She looked at Hayley and gave a compassionate look. “Demetria told me what happened to you.
I’m really sorry for what them and my aunt have put you through.”
Hayley nodded. “Thank you.”
“Demetria informed me to why you two wanted to meet with me. I knew about the plan your mom wanted to do. At first, I didn’t know she was the one behind it, because Shantel was the one who approached me to go along with it. I turned her down, only because I didn’t want any part of what was going on. I didn’t want to be associated with anything they did. Instead, I’m trying to live my life without any issues or drama.”
“And why should we believe you?” I asked.
“Because I never lie. If I tell you something, then it’s the honest truth. After what my dad did to my mom, I distanced myself from that part of the family. Honestly, those three and even my uncle deserved what they got.”
“Are you referring to your dad cheating on your mom?”
“That and other things.”
“What about Craig? Do you know anything about him and my mom?”
“Not much. I know that he and my dad were close and that your mom associated with my dad sometimes. Not just her, but I think your uncle too.”
